Tropicanna Canna Leaf
Tropicanna Canna Leaves

One of my favorite plants to cultivate from tubers is the canna. In this post, I’ll share an inspiring container planting featuring Tropicanna Canna alongside a few other beloved plants. The images aim to demonstrate how easy it is to grow these stunning plants when placed in the right conditions.

Tips on Growing Tropicanna Canna in Containers

When planting canna plants in containers, select a pot that provides excellent drainage, as Tropicanna canna tubers dislike sitting in water. For healthy growth, they prefer well-drained and slightly dry soil. Here are a few more tips for growing canna plants in containers:

  1. Container Size: Choose a large enough container to accommodate the canna’s growth. A depth of at least 18 inches is recommended to allow the roots to spread comfortably.

  2. Soil Mix: Use a high-quality potting mix that retains some moisture but drains well. Adding sand or perlite can improve drainage.

  3. Watering: While cannas like dry feet, they still need regular watering, especially during hot weather. Ensure the top inch of soil dries out between waterings.

  4. Fertilization: Feed your canna plants every 4-6 weeks with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer to encourage vibrant foliage and flowers.

  5. Positioning: Place the container in a sunny spot, as cannas thrive in full sunlight. They need at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight a day.

  6. The canna plants can not survive winter in my hardiness zone.  I dig them up each autumn after a light frost and move them to the dome greenhouse or into the garage where they will not go below freezing.

Tropicanna Canna and Purslane Toucan Yellow

I am excited to share images of the Purslane Toucan Yellow plant I acquired from Mulberry Creek a few years back. I truly love the shape and color of its leaves. This plant was introduced by Ball Seed Company and looks stunning next to my Tropicanna Canna, although I wasn’t able to keep it alive through the winter in my greenhouse. (bummer)

Other Tropicanna Canna Companion Plantings

Over the past 10 years I have wintered over the Tropicanna Canna in my dome greenhouse.  Each summer I have been able to put together new companion plantings in containers with this beauty.
