Market Place Cucumber Plant
A new Marketplace Cucumber on Vine

Growing cucumbers is a simple and rewarding endeavor during the late spring to early summer. Most cucumber plants thrive in rainy conditions, making this the ideal time to start your own crop. In this post, I will share my process for growing a few cucumber plants from seeds, which were later transplanted into my raised bed garden. Be sure to watch the video showcasing the success of the plants in raised beds with a small trellis, along with helpful growing tips below.

How to Cultivate Cucumbers in a Raised Bed Garden

First, select a sunny spot in your garden for the raised bed, as cucumbers flourish with plenty of sunlight. Begin by filling your raised bed with a rich, well-draining soil mix, ideally one that is enriched with compost to provide essential nutrients. Start your seeds indoors about 3–4 weeks before the last expected frost date in your area. Plant the seeds in small pots or seed trays, keeping the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.

Once the seedlings have developed a few true leaves and the outdoor temperatures have warmed consistently, it’s time to transplant them into the raised bed. Space the plants about 12–18 inches apart, allowing ample room for growth and airflow, which helps prevent diseases. Consider installing a small trellis to encourage vertical growth, making harvesting easier and reducing the risk of rot by keeping the cucumbers off the ground.

Regular watering is crucial, especially during dry spells, as cucumbers have a high water requirement. Water deeply at the base of the plants to encourage deep root growth, and try to avoid wetting the foliage. Mulching around the base will help retain soil moisture and suppress weeds.

Keep an eye out for pests such as cucumber beetles, and consider using row covers or organic insecticides if necessary. My biggest issue this year in my edible garden area was the cabbage moth.  Thankfully, that catepillar stayed clear of my cucumbers. Regularly inspect the plants for any signs of disease or nutrient deficiency, and take appropriate action as needed.  A few of my leaves are starting to get a little yellow from too much rain.  I will end up removing those leaves and pray we get more sunshine to help speed up the harvest.

Harvest a few Marketplace Cucumbers

Harvest cucumbers when they are firm, green, and reach the desired size, typically 6–8 inches long for slicing varieties. Frequent harvesting encourages the plant to produce more fruit. Enjoy your fresh cucumbers in salads, pickles, or as a refreshing snack straight from the garden! The cucumbers I grew from seed this year are the ‘marketplace’ and ‘white spine’ varieties. Once you see a cucumber begin to form be sure to check it daily because they grow super fast!
