Christmas Cactus (Schlumbergera) Video

Welcome to my Ohio hardiness zone 5b dome garden during the late Autumn season.  This is a fun time of year in the dome during the December holiday season.  Many blooms are done from the summer garden that have been tucked in this growing space and the Christmas Cactus begin to take color.   Check out the video below to see how the 5 plants I have been growing in the geodesic bio dome for well over five years.

Latest Christmas Cactus Plant Tips

It is fun to have some color during the late autumn into winter season.  In the video I share my rare yellow cactus along with the unique peach color bloom.  Below are a few of the latest growing tips:

  • Keep cuttings well watered and grouped close together in small container. The new plant will grow from the existing leaves (phylloclades) which can reach 2 feet in one year.
  • Use a well draining potting soil for new starter pieces.
  • Be careful not to set the plant in direct sunlight during the spring and summer season.  However, during the winter months the plant will set a long lasting bloom in a bright light window.
  • Avoid relocating the Christmas cactus once the buds start to appear, as any changes in temperature or growing conditions may cause the buds to drop.
  • Exercise patience as you wait for your plant to flourish. With a bit of plant food during the appropriate season, your cactus will thrive and grow happily!
