Day 2 of Turkey Sausage and Cabbage Soup

Perhaps what I love most about this recipe is it is tasty and very good for you.  I whipped this up today before heading outside to enjoy the spring day.  It was nice to return indoors to a fragrant house and warm meal.  All of the ingredients used for this soup I keep on hand in my pantry most of the year.  Turkey Sausage is one of the best priced and easy to find meats right now at my grocery stores.  I throw a few of the bulk packages in my freezer so I can enjoy it anytime.

what you will need:

  • Turkey Sausage
  • Olive Oil
  • Sweet Onion
  • Garlic
  • Carrots
  • Green Cabbage
  • celery
  • Spices (Salt, Pepper, Crushed Red Pepper Flakes)
  • Canned Diced Tomatoes
  • Cannellini Beans
  • Chicken Stock

My son loves things on the spicy side so I added a fresh jalapeno diced.  I grow jalapeno pretty much year-round so this is a great addition.

What Variety of Cabbage to Bring To The Dinner Table

It is hard to believe there are more than 2 different types of cabbage.  When I think of this cool crop I think of green and the ‘cabbage patch’ doll.  Seriously, I always wanted one of those dolls and every time I see a beautiful cabbage growing in the garden I think of those toys.  In today’s share, we will be exploring different varieties including how to grow and different recipes. Seriously awesome vegetable that is defiantly one of the best health foods of all time.  One of my favorites to grow in my home garden is a red variety that I use in stir-frys.  I will share the recipe at the bottom of this post.  The vegetable is rich in compounds that protect us from cancers and the signs of aging according to health experts. Cabbage Growing Tips As home gardeners, there are many reasons to grow this crop. The best time to grow cabbage is in late spring and late summer into autumn because they grow best during the cool season.  The different varieties pack nutrients that are great for immunity. Red cabbage leaves have natural antiseptic properties and can be applied directly to wounds to encourage healing and comfort.   Below are a few varieties that grow great in home gardens. Red Cabbage Green Cabbage Bok Choy Napa Cabbage Savoy Cabbage A big problem I have with growing this cool crop is defeating bugs.  I swear the critters love the vegetable as much as we do. I keep it organic by applying a soap mix to the plant in the early morning after watering or an organic insect spray you can purchase on Amazon. Recipes Now the fun part … cooking up the cabbages!  Below are a few of the links mentioned in the video in today’s presentation.  I’ve also included a printable recipe using this vegetable. Napa and Nasturtium Recipe to Grow

One of my favorite images from the raised bed garden is featured in this post.  Learn my napa cabbage and nasturtium recipe to grow on this post.  I can still taste the amazing salads we made with red romaine, napa cabbage, and the bright orange Nasturtium blooms.  YOu will learn a few tips on how to grow these in your home garden as well. Napa Cabbage and Nasturtium Growing Tips Everything in this photo was grown from seed except for the napa cabbage that I bought as a starter plant from a local garden center. In this bed was also radishes, beets, and various lettuces.  I shared the planting day of those seeds in this blog post: Spring Planting.  The best cabbage of any variety I have ever grown has been in the dome during the winter season.  The bugs do not seem to get bother the cabbage-like they do in my raised beds outdoors. Napa Cabbage and Nasturtium Planting Recipe Start the nasturtium seeds after all danger of frost as a border plant. Be sure to check out what local nurseries and garden centers have in the veggie starter plant department.  I’m noticing a growing trend in oriental veggies. Lettuces are easy to start from seed as long as you do it early in the season and water carefully. Established plants benefit from mulch because it will help keep the plant cool and keep in moisture. My Cabbage Recipes I made a Pinterest board with a few of my favorite garden recipes including napa cabbage ideas. Don’t miss the napa cabbage used in rolls – they are AMAZING!
