My Tips on Saving Marigold Seeds

Preserving seeds from heirloom plants is an excellent method to guarantee that you can cultivate more plants in future seasons. By following a few simple steps, you can easily collect seeds from your garden and replant them. Here are some helpful seed-saving tips applicable to various heirloom plant varieties. The seeds highlighted in this post are heirloom marigolds

Harvesting Marigolds

First, allow the marigold flowers to dry completely on the plant. This ensures that the seeds are mature and ready for harvesting. Once the petals have withered and the flower heads have turned brown, gently clip them off the stem.

Next, carefully open the dried flower heads over a clean sheet of paper or a bowl to catch the seeds. You’ll notice that marigold seeds are long and slender, with a pointed end. Remove any remaining petals or debris to ensure the seeds are clean and free from moisture, which can cause mold during storage.

To store the seeds, place them in a paper envelope or a small glass jar (or plastic) with a lid. Label the container with the date and variety of the seeds, so you’ll know exactly what you’re planting next season. Keep the seeds in a cool, dry place until you’re ready to plant them.
