Planting Garlic in My Autumn Home Garden

Garlic in Home Cooking

One of my favorite ingredients to cultivate and cook with is garlic. In this post, I share a video along with images from my garden, showcasing the process of planting garlic in the autumn. You’ll also find pictures from the only garden center in my area that sells garlic bulbs. Additionally, I’ve included gardening tips to ensure a successful growth experience during this season.

Sharing the gardening techniques from my home is something I truly enjoy. In today’s video, I’ll take you into one of the many raised beds that my husband and I constructed outside our greenhouse. These beds are simple to maintain and can support growth nearly all year long. The garlic featured in this video will thrive throughout the winter months, similar to many spring-blooming bulbs. For more information on other spring-blooming bulbs, check the bulb category on my website. Please watch the video below to see how I plant garlic in my autumn garden.

The highlighted video is an integral part of my Bren Haas YouTube Channel, where I share a variety of content related to gardening, sustainable living, and creative outdoor projects. This channel serves as a platform for me to connect with fellow gardening enthusiasts and share my passion for cultivating beautiful, healthy landscapes. Each video offers insights, tips, and inspiration, aiming to empower viewers to embrace their green thumbs and explore the joys of gardening. Garlic Varieties Growing Now

I was overjoyed to discover the variety of garlic bulbs available at Garden Central in Findlay, Ohio. To the best of my knowledge, no other local stores are offering these bulbs during this time of year. Interestingly, it’s the perfect season for planting garlic bulbs in hardiness zone 5b. Take a look at the photos from the garden center, showcasing the varieties I picked to cultivate in my home garden this year. Below, you’ll find details on the three different types of garlic I chose.

Large Selection of Bulbs

German Red Hardneck Garlic Bulbs

Strong, spicy flavor and easy to peel.  Large cloves with reddish streaks.  Yield about 6-10 cloves per head.  Produces edible bloom stalks (scapes).  These will store for well over 3 months.

Nootka Rose Softneck Garlic Bulb

The Nootka Rose Softneck Garlic Bulb has a strong garlic flavor with medium heat.  Medium sized cloves with rosy skin.  Does not produce bloom stalks but will store for well up to 12 months.

Transylvania Softneck Garlic Bulb

I am personally very excited to try this variety because of it’s well known buttery garlic flavor.  The garlic has a sharp heat with medium sized cloves.  Each garlic yields about 10-15 cloves per head and does not produce bloom stalks (scapes).  This variety can be stored for up to 9 months.

Growing Now in My Autumn Garden

This year has been a rewarding journey in my garden, filled with a variety of delightful plants that I’ve cultivated. One of my favorites has been the garlic chives. Their unique flavor adds a wonderful touch to many dishes, enhancing everything from stir-fries to salads. While they offer a milder taste compared to traditional garlic, they bring a fresh, herbaceous note that I find irresistible.

In addition to my planned crops, I’ve also enjoyed a delightful surprise this season: a gourd plant that volunteered itself in my garden. These unexpected treasures are a testament to nature’s resilience and generosity. The joy of nurturing such a plant, one that seemingly appeared out of nowhere, is unparalleled. The gourds have been a fantastic addition to my harvest, and I feel incredibly grateful for the abundance they’ve provided. There’s truly nothing quite like the thrill of free plants yielding a generous harvest, reminding me of the magic and unpredictability of gardening.
