Cherry Explosion Hydrangea Review

This is one of the cutest little shrubs I grow in my home garden.  The 2 feet tall plant surprises me each summer with a few large cherry blooms.  In this blog post I share my thoughts on the ‘Cherry Explosion Hydrangea’.

Cherry Explosion Hydrangea Review

I can’t believe it has been growing in my garden since 2019.  Time sure does fly even when it comes to shrubs that do not disappoint.  The first bloom starts to appear in early summer on this compact shrub.  In this video I share what the shrub looks like during its third summer in my Ohio garden.  The plant is one that gets alot of pampering in the mostly shade location.  Take a look at the video feature on this post and scroll down to Lets Connect section to leave comments.

Cherry Explosion Hydrangea Growing Thoughts

Hydrangea in the Garden

When the plant starts showing signs of life with new dark green leaves in late spring it is always a treat.  The foliage looks amazing under my small Japanese Maple tree outside the sunroom.  This is the second year I decided to give the plant a food feeding. Fertilizing the plant brings on a few extra blooms. It is worth noting that both plants put on about 3-5 large blooms during the summer season at about 2 feet tall and wide.

At The End Of The Season

The blooms just keep on giving  as we head into late summer on my Cherry Explosion Hydrangea.  I do like to cut back the dried blooms by this time to prepare for winter.  Lastly note that my shrub is protected by the raised bed landscape and live mulch.

This video is from my home garden in late summer.  The shrub at this time is 3 years old.

  1. This is the first time I’ve planted the cherry explosion! How do I get it ready for winter here I northern illinois?

    1. Hey Tim – thanks for stopping by my website. I created a video featuring my Cherry Explosion Hydrangea to share with you what my plant looks like later in the season. This video content also includes what I do to prepare the plant for winter in Ohio (hardiness zone 5b / 6). To be honest, I don’t really care for the blooms late in the season so I cut them back and let the green sprout new leaves. I hope you take a look at this b log post to see photos and video that answer your question in detail. Thank you for asking and I hope to hear more about your shrubs in Illinois.
