This is the dwarf winesap apple tree

In this post I share the Winesap Apple Tree growing in my home garden.  This content is during the spring season after 4 winters growth.  Check out images and my personal review of the tree so far!

Winesap Apple Tree Video

Because this tree is a dwarf variety it will only grow to 15-20 feet tall making it perfect for most any home garden orchard.  In fact, this video shows the tree at about 7 feet tall and 5 feet wide in year 4. In spite of it being some what of a drought this year the tree is loaded with fruit!

About the Winesap Apple Tree

First off it is important to note that there is a Stayman winesap apple along with a dwarf variety.  The tree is a combination of tart and sweet.  It is fun to think that this tree variety has been around since pioneer days.  The apples are not only tasty but also long-lived after being harvested, lasting 6 months or more in the refrigerator. Consider using this rich, wine-like flavor apple in applesauce, pies, and cider not to forget fresh off the tree!

The tree feature on this blog is nestled in with many other varieties such as heirloom apple, Jonathan, honey crisp or early harvest to ensure pollination.

Chicago Hardy Fig Tree

Growing and Harvesting from My Very Own Chicago Hardy Fig Tree

One of the coolest things ever was pulling ripe figs right from the tree in California and enjoy them with friends at Veggie Trials last summer. I’ve always wanted a fig tree of my own not only because they produce yummy fruit but because the tree is beautiful. Growing and Harvesting from My Very Own Chicago Hardy Fig Tree In this video, check out the last of the fig harvest after a long summer of enjoyment.  The tree provides more than just edible amazing fruit – the shade in the dome is amazing during the hot high sun days.  Be sure to check out the video below and comment. You maybe surprise WHO is the biggest fig fan in my home. This video was recorded and edited on my iPhone.  Find this video and other creative content on my Bren Haas YouTube Channel features on this website. The Chicago Hardy Fig Tree It wasn’t until I figured out how to harvest the fig that I truly fell in love.  A few years ago I wasn’t watching the delicate fruit and it would riping and rot because I didn’t know you have to harvest within a day in the growing conditions I have the tree in.  I am not sure if they ripen as quick outdoors.  One thing for sure, the fig is NOTHING like pears or apples we grow in our orchard. If you are in the cooler end of the zoning you will want to mulch the tree really well before winter arrives. The tree may even die all the way back. I’m keeping mine in a large tall container growing in the Geodesic Bio Dome this winter.  The Chicago Hardy Fig tree is rated for zone 5-10. Amazing Fig Harvest Rich in iron and high fiber in these little boost your energy flavor booms! Not only can you just eat these amazing fruits off of the tree but there are many recipes featuring these treats.  The tree I grow in the dome has been producing 3-4 figs each day for the month of July and August. My Thoughts I totally recommend this tree in any garden. Because it is so hardy you can basically grow it anywhere.  Give it a try!
