snowbells in Ohio
snowbells in bloom

What a surprise to find a pure white bloom that has been out in the crazy Ohio weather conditions. Sleet, snow and even above average temperatures in my hardiness zone 5b garden. Find video and images here showcasing the helleborus niger ‘snowbells’ .

Helleborus niger ‘snowbells’ in Bloom Video

This video is part of my Bren Haas YouTube Channel Collection.  Feel free to subscribe to my channel for LIVE updates and more.

In this video, I will showcase a charming garden nestled around a maple tree. This elevated area is bordered by stone blocks that help retain the soil. Within this rich environment, you’ll find a variety of perennials thriving, including the ornamental cabbage plant, which is actually not a perennial. I think most people don’t realize how beautiful this plant will get during the cold season. You can find this plant in most garden centers during the early spring along with late summer for Autumn color. The plant in this video has been through snow – sleet – and temperatures way below freezing and we are only at the beginning of winter for my hardiness zone 5b. I had a few pansies planted around the cabbage but they have died back… The ornamental cabbage is said to be edible but I wouldn’t eat it… This pairs beautifully with the Helleborus niger, This variety is called ‘Snowbells’. I don’t recall planting two in this area, so perhaps it has spread over the past seven years. All of my Helleborus growing on my property stay this beautiful green year-round. In the spring the other varieties have more flowers that blooms above the beautiful healthy leaves.

I noticed the buds forming for a bloom on the plant just a week before Christmas. Look at it today.. what a treat on New Years Day!

More Hellebores In My Garden

I have been growing the Walters Gardens collection of hellebores for over five years now.  After the first year of making sure they were established I literally do NOTHING but enjoy them as they bloom.   Below is the other location I have the perennial growing on my property.
