Berry Crumble Recipe
The original recipe comes from Jean Ann Van Krevelens book, ‘Grocery Gardening,’ which specifically called for brambleberries. Be sure to check out my book review on BrenHaas.com! Back in 2010, if you wanted detailed gardening information, such as identifying this berry, you had to visit the library or contact your local farm extension. I decided to tweak the recipe by using fresh strawberries from the grocery store and frozen red raspberries that I had preserved from my garden. Over the years, this recipe has transformed into my go-to quick breakfast treat and a delightful summer dessert. Find the printable recipe card at the bottom of this blog post.
Ingredients
- 4 cups brambleberries ( strawberries, red raspberries, blueberries, and or black raspberries), washed and drained
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch
- 1/2 cup whole wheat flour
- 1/2 cup crushed graham crackers
- 1/2 cup rolled oats
- 1/2 cup dark brown sugar
- 8 tablespoons cold butter , cut into pieces
Directions
- Preheat the oven to 350*F
- Place the berries in a large 9×9 baking dish, Sprinkle the sugar and corn starch evenly over the berries.
- In a food processor add the flour, graham cracker crumbs, oats, brown sugar and salt and pepper dash. Throw in cold butter and pulse until incorporated. Be sure to not pulse too much – crumble!
- Spoon the crumble mix on top of the berries. Bake for 30 minutes or until the top is browned and the berry mixture is bubbling.
note: best if served fresh and don’t be afraid to add some whip cream, ice cream or yogurt on the side!

What Is a Brambleberry?
“Officially speaking, brambles include raspberries, blackberries, and any products derived from them,” states Annie Geyer. Anne Geyer is the founder and co-owned of AgriBerry Farm and CSA in Hanover, Virginia. But what exactly defines a bramble? According to Geyer, brambles are inherently meant to wander. “They thrive at the edge of clearings,” she explains. They flourish in spacious areas filled with sunlight and nestled in mountain foothills.
I have wild black and red raspberries that grow along our wood line here in Ohio but do not use them too often because they have lots of seeds. The berries don’t go to waste because the deer and other critters enjoy eating them when they are in season. A favorite to use in this recipe are the strawberries we grow in raised beds along side various flowers. You can find easy tips on growing strawberries on my blog website.
