Autumn marks the time when leaves gracefully tumble to the ground. This season also brings the responsibility of managing the leaves that fall from your trees. In this post, I will share the methods we use to handle the abundance of leaves that accumulate during the autumn months.
Optimal Approaches for Managing Fallen Leaves

One of my favorite methods is to use a lawn mower to mulch the leaves directly onto the lawn. This not only saves time but also enriches the soil as the tiny leaf particles break down. It’s a simple, efficient way to recycle nature’s bounty.

Another great option is composting. By adding leaves to your compost pile, you create a rich, nutrient-dense soil amendment. Mixing them with green materials like grass clippings helps speed up decomposition, resulting in a perfect balance for your garden. The ginkgo leaves in the photo above are mulched and sprinkled into compost piles in the wood line. These leaves seem to take longer to break down if just thrown into pile.

For those tender plants that need a little extra care during the colder months, leaves can be used as a natural blanket. Simply layer them around the base of your plants to provide insulation from the frost.

Finally, consider your specific garden needs. Whether you choose to mulch, compost, or use them as insulation, fallen leaves can be a valuable resource for improving your garden’s health and vitality. Embrace the abundance of autumn leaves and let them work for you in multiple beneficial ways.
