Growing geraniums from seed can be one of the most fulfilling activities to undertake in the spring. When you start the seeds at the proper time and meet some simple requirements, you can transform your home garden and patio with stunning blooms. In this post, I’ll share my essential tips for successfully growing geraniums from seed.

Growing Geraniums From Seed Video

In the video below I show how my seedlings are doing after starting the seed back in February.  You will see the way the geraniums were sown indoors back in February using basic supplies you can find locally or on amazon.  Be sure to watch the video to the end so you can see how the seedlings are going to grow until the last frost date in my hardiness zone.  Video Below:

Growing Geraniums from Seed Tip

To grow geraniums from seed, sow seeds in early to mid-February indoors, using a seed-starting mix, and maintain a warm, moist environment before gradually acclimate seedlings to outdoor conditions. Below are a few important points or tips for achieving germination and happy new seedlings.

  • Use plastic wrap or a clear plastic dome to maintain humidity during germination.  The dome lid containers worked amazing for me early on.
  • Ensure the seed-starting mix is thoroughly moistened before planting and during the germination process.  However, be sure the soil isn’t soggy or bogged down.
  • Geranium seeds need warmth (70-75°F) to germinate so I use a seed heat mat indoors to begin the germination process.
  • Germination of geranium seeds can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks.  Mine took about 14 days.
  • Ensure seedlings receive ample light, either from a sunny window or grow lights.
  • Once the seedlings get their true leaves they can be transplanted to bigger container.
  • Geranium seedlings can be slow-growing, so be patient.

I would love to hear from you so be sure to comment on the space provided on this post.  Have you grown geraniums from seed?  As noted in video it has been a few years since I grow this annual from seed but I am having a fun time watching the seeds germinate and grow in my home and dome.  Stay tuned to see how these grow for me in Summer 2025!

  1. I love this! I have never started my geraniums from seed. I always winter over in the greenhouse and take cuttings in spring. It is a great way to get more of a color you like.

    • Thank you for commenting on my website blog! I am excited to see this variety when it blooms. The geranium seeds were super easy to germinate and grow. Happy Spring.
