This striking plant distinguishes itself among pepper varieties with its dark, deep purple foliage and vibrant fruit blush. Similar to other hot peppers, it requires some time to grow; however, with a bit of patience and an early indoor start, you can enjoy a continuous harvest of peppers over several months.  In this post I share my Autumn Puma Hot Pepper harvest in video and images.

Autumn Harvest of Puma Peppers

It’s hard to believe that beautiful plant and fruit has a Scoville Heat Unti of 300,000 to 400,000!  It is just below the Habanero and way below the Carolina Reaper.  When I first started growing this heirloom variety it was a fun challenge just to see if I would get a harvest.  In the video below I show how beautiful the plant is and why I love growing it.

About Puma Hot Pepper

Firstly, I’d like to highlight the ease of cultivating this pepper from a seed. This marks my third year nurturing the Puma Hot pepper, an heirloom variety.  Below you will find a few photos of the pepper from late in the growing season.

Puma Pepper Early Season

In the past, I’ve included one or two peppers in my salsa recipe. This same pepper can also be utilized for crafting hot sauce which I hope to attempt later this week with my Autumn harvest.

Later in the Season Red Peppers Form

I have read on various reviews of this pepper that it is a hard plant to grow.  This pepper was one of the easiest I have ever grown from seed not to mention the large harvest.  Be sure to start the seed early so the plant has a head start.  Once you get the plant in full summer sun (even here in Ohio) it will take off like mine did.

I am eager to cultivate this variety once more next year. My original seeds were purchased from Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds.  I encourage you to think about adding this beautiful, easy-to-grow plant to your home garden, not just for its resilience to heat but for its stunning appearance!
