The garden has endured significant stress over the past few weeks due to heavy rain and extreme heat. In my hardiness zone of 5b / 6, there are still numerous plants that can be sown from seed. In this post, I’m excited to share a list of some of my favorite plants to directly sow in my home garden right now. I hope this inspires you to begin growing your own garden from seed today!

- Beans
- Beets
- Peas
- Carrots

Ideal Flowers and Herbs to Grow from Seed in July
During this time of year, various flowers and herbs can be cultivated from seed. Here’s a list of some of my favorites to start in July, which you can enjoy through the frost season. Be sure to check the seed package for information on maturity days; aim for 70 days or fewer to maturity when planting in July. Some flower and herb plants can withstand light frost:
- Sunflowers
- Nasturtiums
- Stock
- Zinnia
- Cosmos
- Marigolds
Additionally, you can begin planting Hollyhocks and Coneflowers now to enjoy their blooms next year.
It’s Not Too Late for Starter Plants
You can still plant tomatoes, peppers, and zucchini squash in July. However, it’s best to use transplants and consider shorter season varieties. July planting will allow for a late summer and fall harvest.
This is an excellent opportunity to explore what your local garden centers have available. Below is a list of some of my favorite short season tomatoes.
Short Season Tomatoes
These typically mature in 50-70 days. Here are some varieties to look out for:
- Juliet
- Early Girl
- Stupice
- Celebrity
Be sure to check the starter plant tag or the seed package for information on ‘days to maturity.’
