Here’s a brief video showcasing the leek, onion, and celery seeds I’m planting 13 weeks and 3 days ahead of my last frost date. Be sure to check out my vlog and find more growing tips below.

This video is part of my Bren Haas Gardening You Tube Channel.  I appreciate your support if you are a subscriber.

Leek, Celery and Onion Seed Starting Tips

In this initial seed tray, I will be germinating Celery, specifically the Tall Utah Improved variety. This marks my first year attempting to grow celery from seed, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed! The seeds are incredibly tiny, so I’m filling each cell with several dozen of them, as it’s just too difficult to separate each one. My hope is that I can thin out the seedlings later on to provide them with the space they need. This entire process is a learning journey for me as I explore these varieties today, so make sure to bookmark my channel for more tips and updates!

Next, I’ll be planting LEEK seeds from the American Flag variety. Thankfully, the seeds for onions and leeks are significantly larger than the celery seeds! I plan to place a few extra seeds in each cell when possible. I’m optimistic that I’ll be able to separate the seedlings once they start to grow – fingers crossed!

Gently sprinkle a small amount of seed starting mix over the seeds, ensuring they are completely covered before adding the label and placing the lid on the tray. For the first week, I will keep the vent lid closed to retain maximum heat inside the dome tray!

Since the soil was moist during planting, I will hold off on misting these trays for 24 hours.

Stay Tuned and be sure to bookmark my blog here to see how these plants do.  I have high hopes!!!!

Seed Starter Mix

Organic Seed Starting Mix
Organic Seed Starting Mix

SHOUT OUT TO MENARDS.... Master Garden™ Eco-Friendly Natural & Organic Seed Starting Mix is expertly designed to help you cultivate the best garden possible. This mix is environmentally friendly, primarily composed of coconut coir, a renewable and sustainable material created from recycled coconut husks. It boasts a neutral pH, making it perfect for starting a wide variety of vegetables, flowers, and herbs from seeds. Additionally, Master Garden™ Seed Starting Mix is enriched with Natural and Organic Plant Food to enhance seed germination.  I purchase mine from local Menards Store.

I just love this mix… it is clean feeling and really doesn’t have much of a scent to it at all. SUPER easy to scoop into the little seed starting cells I am using today. I am going to fill these little trays up almost to the top without packing the mix down in so it is nice and loss. It is important to have a seed starting mix that is fluffy like this… water will drain from it super easy – and hopefully the perlite in this mix will only hold the needed moisture for seed starting.

Good SEED Starting Mix, Sturdy and clean trays to grow in .. and don’t forget the Tweezers for seed grabbing , a clean saucer to pour seeds into for planting, tags and a marker.

In conclusion from starting these seeds today I must say I am super excited.  This could just be the best crop I have ever had of celery and onion.  The leek plant is something I have always wanted to try so now I can take it off my bucket list.  I hope you consider connecting with me today about this topic.  Maybe you have some leek seed starting tips to share?
