January tends to be quite overcast, with only about two hours of sunlight per day and just 30% clear skies during this time of year. Therefore, it’s truly delightful to be inside my 20-foot geodesic bio dome whenever the sun decides to shine. In today’s post, I’m excited to share a video update featuring a sunny afternoon in the dome. You can find more details and highlight images on my website.

Lengthening Days Highlights

While the cloudy days prevail, January does bring longer daylight hours compared to December.

Have you noticed the leaves dropping from the hot pepper plant? It certainly seems to be longing for the sunlight and warmth.

On a brighter note, check out this cold-hardy basil known as ‘Green Pepper basil.’ It’s positioned to receive maximum sunlight, even though temperatures in this area may drop to 45°F. It looks incredibly healthy and vibrant in this little herb setup!. The contrast between the struggling hot pepper plant and the thriving basil is a testament to how different plants adapt to the unique conditions inside the dome. This resilient basil not only endures the cooler temperatures but seems to flourish, its leaves a deep, lush green, exuding a fresh, peppery aroma that fills the space.

As the days continue to lengthen, it’s fascinating to observe how even the smallest changes in sunlight affect the growth of these plants. It’s a gentle reminder of nature’s resilience and adaptability. Each day in the dome brings new insights and surprises, and I’m eager to see how the coming weeks will unfold as we inch closer to spring.
