January Dome Update | Bobcat Sighting VLOG

Every morning, I review the footage recorded overnight by the cameras positioned around the gardens. You can imagine my astonishment when I spotted what looks like a bobcat casually wandering near the dome. Just thinking about it gives me goosebumps—it’s incredible to see such a magnificent creature on my property here in Ohio. Watch the video and share your thoughts in the comments section!

About Bobcats in Ohio

After reviewing the camera footage, it’s necessary to keep an eye on the area around the dome, where a bobcat was spotted. I did some research on this subject, and I found credible information from various sources that I will list below.

  • Adaptability: These elusive creatures have remarkably adjusted to a variety of habitats, including Ohio’s forests and fields.
  • Physical Characteristics: Bobcats are recognized for their distinctive tufted ears and short bobbed tails.
  • Behavior: They are solitary animals primarily active during dawn and dusk, and they are skilled hunters, preying on small mammals, birds, and even insects.

In recent years, there have been more sightings of bobcats in Ohio, indicating a positive trend in their population recovery after nearly being wiped out by the mid-1800s due to habitat loss and unregulated hunting. Conservation efforts and protective legislation have been vital to their resurgence.

Bobcats are generally shy and tend to avoid humans, making them a rare but thrilling sight for anyone fortunate enough to encounter them in the wild. Their presence serves as a testament to the health of Ohio’s ecosystems and underscores the importance of continued conservation efforts to ensure these magnificent animals can thrive in their natural habitat.

Be sure to check out the ODNR ( Ohio Department of Natural Resource) to see the official map featuring where the bobcats have been sighted. You can also report any wildlife you may see in your county.

Let’s Connect

It’s hard to believe that over ten years have passed since we constructed the dome and began using it for winter growing seasons. It’s incredible how the 20-foot dome has transformed from a space to winter plants into a thriving greenhouse that exceeds my hardiness zone of 5b/6. Please consider bookmarking my website to stay updated on my personal experiences.
