This is undoubtedly one of the simplest pie recipes featuring fresh apples. Prepare it for gatherings or simply because you have an abundance of delicious apples from the autumn harvest. Below, you’ll find my recipe along with a selection of apples I love to use for this dish.
Easy Apple Pie Ingredients
I should mention that in this recipe, we take a shortcut by using a store-bought crust. It’s my go-to during the cooler months, allowing me to whip up all types of pies at a moment’s notice. Who doesn’t enjoy a slice of apple, pumpkin, or even chicken pot pie made ALMOST from scratch? With that in mind, here are a few of my favorite apples for this EASY apple pie recipe.
Winesap Apples
I adore the Winesap apple tree so much that we planted another dwarf variety in our garden this year. I only managed to harvest two apples from the new tree, which stands about six feet tall, but it was also a drought year. The older tree produced over a dozen large apples despite being smaller. I share more about this variety and its easy cultivation in my backyard on my website in the Winesap Apple Review.
Evercrisp Apples
Every year, I find Evercrisp apples at a local farmers market. They have an incredible shelf life, allowing you to buy them as soon as they arrive, typically in early October. With Honeycrisp and Fuji as their parent varieties, you can imagine the delightful sweetness of these crunchy apples.
Here are some photos from Haslinger Orchards where I enjoy purchasing many products grown at their farm.
Easy Apple Pie Recipe
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 1 hour
Difficulty Level: medium
Servings: 8
Ingredients:
- 2 – 9 inch store-bought pie crust
- 6-7 large sweet/tart apples peeled, cored, and sliced
- ½ cup sugar
- ½ cup light brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon flour
- 2 teaspoons nutmeg
- ½ tablespoon cinnamon
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice and zest of the lemon
- 1 egg lightly beaten in a small bowl for egg wash
Directions:
1.Place a store-bought pie crust in the bottom of the pie plate. Keep the
second one on hand for the topper.
2.Make sure the oven rack is in the center and preheat the oven to
400°F.
3.In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, light
brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice with zest. Mix
lightly.
4.Fill the pie crust bottom in the pie plate with this filling before
putting the second crust on top. Feel free to decorate, but be sure to
make slices so the juice can bubble out while cooking. Pinch the
edges of the pie crust together along the entire pie.
5.Brush the top of the pie crust with the egg wash. Cover the edges
with a pie shield or strips of foil to prevent over-browning during the
first 25 minutes.
6.Bake at 400°F for 20 minutes. Remove the edge cover and turn down
to 375°F, then continue to bake for an additional 35-40 minutes. Let
the pie cool for at least 2 hours before serving.

That pie looks really good. I sometimes use ready-made crusts too. It does speed things up when you are really busy! I sometimes make apple pie in a 9×13 pan. Not as attractive but feeds more people!! lol
