Let’s jump right into addressing one of the most challenging tasks in the garden – taking care of weeds.  This garden is in desperate need of weeding, so staying on top of it is essential to prevent it from becoming overwhelming. In this post, I’ll share a video featuring valuable tips on how to remove weeds from my home garden, which I hope will be beneficial for you.

Tips on Weeding in the Home Garden

With about an inch of rain falling in the last 12 hours, now is the perfect time for some weeding. I have several areas near my home that require extra attention. In this video, I’ll take you through my experience and share techniques for removing common weeds in my hardiness zone. The area featured in my video today is one of my worst beds for weeds, likely due to birds dropping seeds in the vicinity. A reliable tool is essential for digging in and pulling out the roots. Scroll below the video for additional highlights on this topic.

Identifying and Removing Weeds

Removing the Weed Roots
Removing the Roots is Essential

If you take a close look at the base of the soil where the plant is coming from is ideal. It is best to pull the weed out from the base, aiming to remove as much of the root as possible without disturbing the nearby plants. Even if you can’t completely detach it, killing it at the base will cause it to turn brown and die, preventing it from choking other plants. Here are a few of my tips for removing weeds in the home garden.

Weeding Techniques

  • Prevention: Applying a heavy 2-3 inch layer of wood mulch in garden beds effectively blocks the sunlight that weeds need to germinate.
  • Removal: Hand-pulling works wonders for tap rooted and sprouting weeds (like dandelions and chickweed), especially right after heavy rain when the soil is loose.
  • Stay proactive with weeding to prevent overwhelming growth.
  • Utilize tools like a hoe or a weeder for effectively removing weeds and their root systems.

Bindweed in The Garden
The Bindweed is in the Morning Glory Family

Bindweed: infamous for its rapid growth, stubborn deep roots, and ability to choke out surrounding vegetation.  I have been battling this weed the longest in my gardening adventures.

Poison Ivy : Is at the top of my list of most hated weeds!  This plant is woody and aggressive. Infamous for causing rashes and has a root system that can entangle itself in everything planted in the landscape.  It also can grow into the size of a large tree so keep this in mind when collecting campfire for your next outdoor adventure!

Final Thoughts on Removing Weeds

While pulling weeds, watch out for poison ivy and other viny weeds. You can use a larger hoe, but since I’m already pulling weeds, I’ll keep using my weeder. Avoid pulling the tops of weeds; instead, dig into the soil to get the roots.

Remember, if you let weeds take over, they’ll choke out your beautiful flowers. So, stay proactive with your weeding efforts.
