The photo above features the 3 shrubs added in 2017 that I purchased in late summer at Costco.  In this post, I share Vanilla Strawberry Landscape tips for homeowners.

Are Hydrangeas Poisonous

Kink Kitty enjoying the shade in the landscape

It is very important to note that the leaves, flowers, and buds of the hydrangea plant contain a chemical known as amygdalin.  the highest concentrations are believed to be in flowers and young leaves.   The garden cats only enjoy the hydrangeas for shade. However, my indoor cat likes to eat the blooms on the dried hydrangeas so I have to keep those up out his reach. If you have additional questions about your pet and poison I recommend connecting with your veterinarian or pet poison hotline.

About Vanilla Strawberry Hydrangea

First Vanilla Strawberry Hydrangeas in 2012

I first started growing the ‘Vanilla Strawberry’ Hydrangea when I returned from a garden writer event back in 2012.  Imagine the effect of several 4-5 feet tall plants as a hedge, covered in huge pink and white flowers throughout the summer.  No wonder it’s a viral sensation on social media. ‘Vanilla Strawberry’ Hydrangea was introduced by Bailey Nurseries in its First Editions® line.  Today I grow a few of them in various conditions throughout my hardiness zone 5b landscape.  These shrubs are super low maintenance needing only a light pruning in early Spring before green leaves appear.

Comparing The Blooms

Here is a video featuring the different bloom colors from my Ohio garden. Be sure to comment below and tell me what you think about these variations.

This video is from my garden in early September after growing the Vanilla Strawberry Hydrangea for well over 8 years.

The conditions in which this shrub grows can change the appearance drastically.  Below I share my experience with the bloom differences from each situation in the landscape. One thing for sure, no matter where you grow the shrub is easy and enjoyable.

Today those same hydrangeas grow in my front garden that gets mostly shade but a nice later afternoon soon.  The plant is a superstar in my garden because it tolerates various conditions. Super dry and the plant in the most late afternoon sun and the blooms are smaller and not as rich in color.  The blooms in full sun are striking with a short grass border. Either way…. check out this plant and be sure to consider adding one to your home garden.
