Highlights in The Edible Garden Book Review
In the book, Alys highlights interesting edible topics that caught my eye as a homesteading gal. I think what I love most about this book is Alys Fowler and I have a lot in common. Below are the 2 highlights I took away from this publication.
Foraging
I love the section on Foraging because it is something I’ve always wanted to experience safely being surrounded by woods in northwest Ohio. Here are 3 points that stood out in the book:
- Be sure you check with the landowner before you harvest or uproot any plants.
- Certain plants are protected by law so check with forestry officials or landowner before foraging. In Ohio, I would check out the Wildlife Ohio DNR.Gov site for details.
- Be a sustainable forager and only take what you need. This is called harvesting responsibility: seed and plants are the future.
Seed Starting – Hardening Off
Safely bringing those new seed starters out to the edible garden has always been a challenge for me. In The Edible Garden, Book Alys points out how you can easily use a cold frame or a makeshift cold frame to shelter those new baby plants.
