Natural Way to Prevent Pest Infestations Before They Begin

It’s hard to believe, but that time is right around the corner. And if you think you can just throw your favorite umbrella haphazardly in your shed, think again! Look what happens when mice and rodents get cozy in those long, cold winter months!  Last winter I had a few mice that decided to spend the winter in my shed attached to the greenhouse and BOY did they make a mess of any paper they could find in my storage area.  Not to mention the diseases these little critter carry…. YUCK!

Just think of all the hiding places those pesky rodents will have in barbecue grills, pool toys, gazebos, hot tubs…the list goes on and on. Rodents, pests and insects are very opportunistic, and will find shelter in places you might not think about, including:

  •         Barbecue grills. Frequently left untouched and under a cover for long periods of time, grills can offer a protected place for mice to nest, especially if any crumbs are left behind.
  •         Decks and gazebos. If there is vacant space underneath any structure, it will provide pests with shelter from the elements.
  •         Hot tubs, pool houses, and outdoor sound systems. In addition to needing shelter, rodents also love to chew on things because it feels good on their teeth. Electrical wiring is a favorite item for rodents, but very expensive for you to repair.

Pest prevention expert and founder of earthkind® all natural pest prevention products, Kari Warberg Block offers three key tips to help you prevent pest infestations before they begin:

  1.  Built to last. If it’s going to sit in storage for any length of time, cardboard won’t cut it! Mice love chewing up cardboard boxes for nesting material, and bugs like to eat the glue that holds the box together, so opt for hard plastic totes instead. For extra protection, include a fast-acting Stay Away® Rodent pouch inside the container. Made with Balsam Fir Oil, Stay Away® Rodent repels with an odor that is offensive to rodents, but pleasant to humans. It can be used to repel rodents from treated areas, including garages, sheds, attics, pantries, basements, and even vehicles, for up to 30 days.  “I left the pouches out and poof! They were gone! And it smells so good, it’s like a 2 in 1 bag. I highly recommend it,” stated Stay Away® Rodent customer Charlie Rodriguez.
  2. No food. Maybe you didn’t quite finish the box of graham crackers or bag of marshmallows at the last bonfire, but don’t even think about packing them away for next year. Check and double-check any bags, small containers, or pockets for snacks and crumbs too. Rodents have an extremely strong sense of smell and will be attracted to any source of food you may have missed when packing things away.
  3.  Wash it first. Pests like moths and spiders love quiet, undisturbed places. Anything in storage is a dream home and the contents inside provide the perfect feast. Wash all towels, blankets, clothing and fabrics you’re planning on storing to make sure there’s nothing for moths to feed on. Moth larvae don’t just feed on furs, silk, and wool – they love any organic material like stray hairs, fur shed by pets, and sweat or body oils left behind.

I’ll tell ya… I was very nervous when I saw my roll of paper towel had been chewed to bits in the potting shed last spring. I was super nervous to open a box or drawer with fear of what might jump out at me. Luckily the critter was gone and only a huge mess with mice poop and stinky pee was left behind. This year I can’t wait to try this product with hopes I won’t have unwanted guest in my greenhouse potting shed.
