You all know I love to push the limits and grow just about anything (legal) I can get my hands on.  Introduced to the Mangave a few years ago at a new plant tour in Michigan I quickly became obsessed. Today I am working on owning the complete collection.  In this post, I share why I am Mad About Mangave Plants!

Mad About Mangave

Cavalier King Charles and Mangave
Oliver loves Mangave too!

Perhaps one of the coolest plants on the plant, well at least I think so.  WHY?!  The Mangave shows off so many different colors when grown in various light conditions. Here are a few reasons I recommend the Mangave to the home gardener.

  • Unique Form that is easy to handle
  • Captivating Color no matter what sunlight conditions it is placed in.
  • Grows beautifully in containers or in the landscape.
  • The plant can double over a few months if it is given space!
  • Easy to overwinter in cooler climates making it a unique houseplant during the winter months.

The Mangave is technically an annual in my garden (hardiness zone 5b) but it does amazing over the winter in my 20′ Geodesic Bio-Dome (hardiness zone 8-9).

Here is a glance at the Mangave I currently own.  Be sure to stay tune because I hope to share more images, where to purchase your own and tips on growing as my collection grows.

Inkblot

I’ve been growing this variety of Mangave since 2017.  I had a few to play with so it got put to the test being added to hanging baskets, water garden (I don’t recommend), outside landscape, different drought conditions and more.  It is a real trooper and made me fall even deeper in love with Mangave.

Newly planted in the landscape around the water feature. I added some ‘friends’ under the mangave to really make that purple pop.  What do you think of it?

This kaleidoscope hasn’t been in the full sun like it should be in to get that pink/coral color to pop.

Tooth Fairy

This is a cute one… I love the little teeth that can poke you but not like some of the cactus I have that are hard to handle.  LOVE THIS little guys shape – don’t you?

The Mangave looks amazing anywhere you put it!  I have grown this plant in just about every place imaginable.  Below are a few of the fun places you may consider growing your own. Give me a shoutout if you’d like to learn more about this plant.

In the image below I showcase my collection for the first time up around a water feature that gets a lot of foot traffic from humans and my fur babies.  I’ll keep you posted with new photos on my social media as it grows.

About Mangave

Mangave is a relatively new plant which is a cross between the genus Manfreda and Agave. These rare hybrids combine the best of both worlds: the better growth rate and the interesting patterns of Manfreda, and the habit and refinement of Agave.  The plant has taken the greenhouse industry by storm because it has a fast growth rate of Mangave-these hybrids finishes more quickly than Agave, thanks to their Manfreda parentage.
