To encourage blooms and keep a perfect shaped lilac shrub you must prune every year. In this post, you will find lilac pruning tips.
Pruning also helps keep the lilac shrub healthy. I have always pruned my lilacs after it blooms in early May. In this post I will share a few tips on pruning lilacs.
The lilac above is the bloom again variety by Proven Winners. This shrubs I will prune twice this year. Below I share photos from the first pruning in mid-June after the first bloom was complete in my Ohio Garden.
The images below show the lilac shrub I’ve been shaping for about 4 years now. Its getting nice and thick and is filled with dozens of lilac blooms each spring. Now that they shrubs next to it are starting to catch up in height I may let the shrub get a little taller.
I’ve got 2 large lilacs in the back garden that are taking on the shape of a tree. I desperately need to get in there and prune these monsters back. When you prune them you will find new shoots at the base of the shrub like in the images below.
I hope this post has encouraged you to prune your lilac shrubs. Let me know if you have any questions or stop by asking on this blog post or reaching out on social media links provided. You can also connect with me on my contact page featured on this website.
