It is hard to believe there are more than 2 different types of cabbage.  When I think of this cool crop I think of green and the ‘cabbage patch’ doll.  Seriously, I always wanted one of those dolls and every time I see a beautiful cabbage growing in the garden I think of those toys.  In today’s share, we will be exploring different varieties including how to grow and different recipes.

perfect cabbage
Seriously awesome vegetable that is defiantly one of the best health foods of all time.  One of my favorites to grow in my home garden is a red variety that I use in stir-frys.  I will share the recipe at the bottom of this post.  The vegetable is rich in compounds that protect us from cancers and the signs of aging according to health experts.

Cabbage Growing Tips

As home gardeners, there are many reasons to grow this crop. The best time to grow cabbage is in late spring and late summer into autumn because they grow best during the cool season.  The different varieties pack nutrients that are great for immunity. Red cabbage leaves have natural antiseptic properties and can be applied directly to wounds to encourage healing and comfort.   Below are a few varieties that grow great in home gardens.

  • Red Cabbage
  • Green Cabbage
  • Bok Choy
  • Napa Cabbage
  • Savoy Cabbage

A big problem I have with growing this cool crop is defeating bugs.  I swear the critters love the vegetable as much as we do. I keep it organic by applying a soap mix to the plant in the early morning after watering or an organic insect spray you can purchase on Amazon.

Now the fun part … cooking up the cabbages!  Below are a few of the links mentioned in the video in today’s presentation.  I’ve also included a printable recipe using this vegetable.
